STATUS
Completed, 2019
A researcher lounge that enhances communication among scientists on campus and strengthens their ties with
the industry. An existing foyer area is transformed into a multipurpose lounge area including an open workspace, event, exhibition, presentation, and social spaces as an escape from laboratories.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
The LEED and BREEAM-certified research building, designed by Cannon Design Nanotechnology Center, is located on Sabanci University campus in Istanbul. At the beginning of the project, a large auditorium was requested to create an 'extrovert hub' within an 'introvert building.'
The ground floor of the building has been inactive since 2011 due to reflective components, deep reverberations, and poorly applied lighting scenarios.
ANALYSIS
The initial research phase started by analyzing the common spaces and ground floors of the faculties on the campus to find ways to connect them all.
Findings are required to work on brief development. The analysis of the current capacity of auditoriums on the campus and insights from the user workshop provide the opportunity to locate a smaller event space and additional zones that facilitate spontaneous encounters.
SYNTHESIS
Flow of space
A circular form is adapted to the hanging track line of the event space to maintain the same geometry as the staircases and load-bearing curtain walls.
Consistency with as-is
The nook at the main entrance of the building was intentionally placed by shifting load-bearing facade walls to maintain a consistent pattern on the facade. A similar nook is also applied at the entrance of the event space.
Acoustic Comfort
After acoustical analysis and modeling, an acoustical material is applied to the metal ceiling. Hanging felt units, the use of carpet, and an automated technical curtain system are secondary measures within the space.
Environmentally responsible
To fulfill the LEED and BREEAM requirements, new interventions need to consider maximizing daylight use, optimizing the use of climate control systems, and selecting sustainable materials.
Fostering a flexible event space to stimulate the engagement of scientists.
CONCEPT
Inspired by the process of experiments in research projects, 'keeping the base undivided' is considered a constant variable. The addition of hanging units enables interchangeable set-ups.
To create a flexible layout and maximize natural light utilization, an automated acoustic curtain encloses the activity area.
Considering the impact of natural light on the usage areas and noise sources, the layout includes activity areas, workspaces, reception areas, and a café.
